Personality[]

Battamonda is a self-centered villain who looks down on the weak with disdain. He claims that he won't bother with the weaklings and instead lets his Ranborgs deal with them. Despite appearing strategic and kind, Battamonda has a violent temper and is very prideful. He is also a coward.

When Battamonda is desperate, he resorts to using underhanded tactics, such as giving false hope to his enemies before crushing their spirits. Despite his villainous tendencies, Battamonda secretly desires someone to care about him and acknowledge him, even if he tries to deny it.

However, when Mashiro shows determination to help him, Battamonda begins to change for the better. Eventually, he is touched by Mashiro's kindness and becomes a better person.

Relationships[]

  • Hijiri Ageha: Battamonda initially underestimates Ageha as an outsider and weak since she wasn't a Cure. However, he begins to see her as a threat after she gains her Pretty Cure powers, and transforms into Cure Butterfly. Ageha forgives Battamonda after he decides to change his ways.
  • Sora Harewataru: Battamonda and Sora are enemies. He harbors a deep grudge against her after she scolds him for his horrible actions. He also has no qualms with crushing her spirit by turning Captain Shalala into a Ranborg just to ridicule her, but is shocked when she actually regains her determination to defeat him. However, Battamonda and Sora are able to make amends after Battamonda decides to change his ways.
  • Nijigaoka Mashiro: Battamonda also views Mashiro as his enemy. At first, he tries to crush her spirit, but is surprised when she is grateful for his criticism instead. She is also the first Cure to make peace with him, as she is the first person to empathize with him.
  • Kabaton: His former colleague, who he used to have a rivalry with. Battamonda thinks Kabaton is an idiot for abandoning a life of pursuing power, after seeing how Kabaton has settled down in Sorashido City. He currently is on friendlier terms with Kabaton after the final battle, although they still bicker sometimes.
  • Minoton: Battamonda and Minoton are at odds with each other, due to their clashing personalities. Although now on friendlier terms, they sometimes still bicker with each other.
  • Skearhead: Battamonda is wary and apprehensive of Skearhead's capabilities, knowing that Skearhead does not tolerate incompetent henchmen and may even execute him. However, due to Prism's unwavering determination, he ultimately disobeys Skearhead and lands a punch on him.

Etymology[]

The name Battamonda is derived from locust, an insect infamous for destroying crops in swarms.[1]

History[]

Battamonda notices Beryberie crying by herself, so he confronts her. He promises to destroy the world that is hurting her, and turns Beryberie's glove into a Ranborg. There he meets Sora, Mashiro, and Tsubasa, who transform into Pretty Cure. He orders his Ranborg to fight the Cures, and is infuriated when the Cures defeat it. He, however, quickly calms down before retreating.HSPC14

Battamonda summons a gigantic Ranborg and threatens to destroy Sky Land unless he gets Ellee-chan. Sky and Prism initially struggle to defeat the Ranborg, but they manage to purify it with the help of Captain Shalala's sacrifice. In a fit of rage, Battamonda curses the King and Queen in front of Ellee-chan, causing them to fall into a coma. However, Battamonda eventually retreats, after Sky angrily threatens that she'll never forgive him if he hurts Ellee-chan.HSPC15

Battamonda appears in Sorashido City and spots an Ogre Statue. He is later confronted by the Pretty Cure, where he admits he has shifted his focus from kidnapping Ellee-chan to just fighting the Pretty Cure. After his Ranborg is defeated, Battamonda angrily vows to bring the Pretty Cure to their knees, but quickly calms down, compliments the Cures for their wonderful fierce fighting skills, and retreats.HSPC16

Battamonda later taunts Ageha for being an outsider, but she stands up to him. He then shows up with a Ranborg to attack the nursery and successfully captures the three Cures. Battamonda tries to harm Takeru and continues to mock Ageha, but he is proven wrong when Ageha transforms into Cure Butterfly. Her Butterfly Press purifies his Ranborg, and Battamonda is left intimidated by her. When Butterfly threatens him, he retreats like the coward he is.HSPC18

After being told off by a construction worker to leave, Battamonda goes to the mountain highlands, where he finds the Cures and Yoyo. He challenges them to a battle against his Ranborg. Battamonda briefly gets an advantage thanks to his Ranborg's flight capabilities, until Wing outwits Battamonda with his knowledge on climate and geography. After his defeat, Battamonda knows his chances are running out, and decides to get serious the next time he faces the Cures again.HSPC21

Battamonda creates an illusion of Captain Shalala to trick Sky and lure her out. Sky eventually realizes that the Ranborg is actually Captain Shalala, and the Cures try to purify the Shalalaborg before they get defeated. Frustrated that the Cures have figured out that Captain Shalala is infused with Undergu Energy, Battamonda gives them an ultimatum: either defeat the Shalalaborg or be defeated by it. Battamonda then leaves, warning that he and the Shalalaborg will return.HSPC22 With Sky's absence, the other three Cures struggle to fight Battamonda and the Shalalaborg. However, to Battamonda's surprise, Sky returns and uses a powered-up version of Sky Punch to hit the Shalalaborg, which then gets purified by Updraft Shining. While the Cures wait for Shalala to wake up, Battamonda attempts to attack them again, but Prism tells him not to move, and that she'll never forgive him if he hurts someone. The Cures then inform Battamonda that they will not forgive him, while Sky declares that she is determined to become even stronger and spares him.HSPC23

It is later revealed that Battamonda, who goes by the name "Monda", is working as a part-time traffic control worker in Sorashido City, struggling to make ends meet. He comes across the Cures and decides to take revenge by trying to criticize Mashiro's dream. However, he constantly worries about the Cures exposing him and is surprised to see them grow stronger while he is hiding from Skearhead. After Mashiro thanks him for his criticism and encourages him, he experiences kindness and acknowledgment for the first time, although he tries to deny it before his boss yells at him to get back to work.HSPC34

On Halloween, Battamonda transforms into Cure Pumpkin to steal all the treats in Sorashido City to destroy the Pretty Cure's reputation. However, the plan fails as the citizens consider the Pretty Cure their heroes who protect them and fight the battles they can't. When the actual Cures appear to give treats to the citizens, Battamonda becomes annoyed that he is being ignored and wants the girls to confront him. Just as he decides to summon a Ranborg, Skearhead appears, causing Battamonda to scream and hide. Later on, he is blamed for summoning a Kyoborg and gets chased by the citizens.HSPC39

Battamonda would later work at a food truck to make ends meet. At the park, he is furious with how the Cures previously foiled his strategy, when he is shocked to realize Kabaton has given up villainy and now living in Sorashido City. He later reflects on how he has never succeeded, even back in his days at the Undergu Empire. Despite intending to discourage Mashiro, he is surprised that Mashiro actually understands how he feels. When trying to hide from Mashiro, he is confronted by Skearhead instead. After Mashiro saves him, he is confused about why she helped him when she would gain nothing out of it but is actually grateful for her valuing his life.HSPC41

Sometime later, Battamonda begins feeling more hopeless about his situation, still remembering Skearhead's cruel words. Unable to process his emotions, he rips the papers out of Mashiro's sketchbook, and reveals himself to her, before snatching away Mashiro's Mirage Pen. Skearhead later takes Mashiro's Mirage Pen from Battamonda, and is told by Skearhead to ingest Undergu Energy in exchange for his life. However, when Battamonda takes back Mashiro's Mirage Pen, and returns it to her, Skearhead forces more Undergu Energy upon him. Touched by Prism's determination to save him, Battamonda's heart shines, giving the Cures the chance to purify him with Majestic Halation. In the end, Battamonda thanks the Cures for saving him, and also apologizes to Mashiro for destroying her sketchbook.HSPC43

Battamonda later helps Yoyo transport more Sky Landians to Earth using his tunnel. Despite Captain Shalala's attempts to clarify, he mistakenly believes she is complimenting him.HSPC48 He then informs the Cures that Daijarg has arrived at Sorashido City and encourages them to fight it. • Battamonda is the only villain from the Undergu Empire who doesn't have an onscreen interaction with Empress Undergu until the last episode.
  • Battamonda's voice actor KENN has shared his opinions about Battamonda during an interview:
    • Battamonda was a very adaptable character at first glance, and KENN thought that he would be very hated by the viewers. However, he is also a necessary evil to tell the viewers not to imitate his actions. He also said that he didn't agree with Battamonda's revenge towards Sora, but comprehends the reasons.
    • When Battamonda returned after episode 23, KENN was impressed by how the season's writers captured Battamonda's psychological complexity and inferiority complex. KENN was also surprised to learn that Battamonda was originally going to be written off permanently after the 23rd episode, but the decision was changed due to positive feedback from the audience. Additionally, KENN did not expect the Cures to save Battamonda. He mentioned that Battamonda would have had a better life if he had been raised in a positive environment rather than the Undergu Empire, and that he has the potential to do good when guided in the right direction.
    • When KENN played both Battamonda's outward words and his true feelings, he usually changed the tone of voice and the atmosphere of both sides without dubbing them separately.
    • KENN revealed in the interview that before the final production of episode 39, he sang Battamonda's lines to the opening melody of a previous Pretty Cure season. However, this idea for Battamonda in said episode was unfortunately rejected by the staff.
