Personality

Ageha is a cheerful, fashionable, reliable older sister type, who has a soft spot for younger children. She is hardworking with a lot of confidence in her own abilities. She is quick to befriend anyone because of her easygoing nature. She can sometimes be a little pushy when she gets excited.

Relationships

  • Nijigaoka Mashiro: Ageha's childhood friend. She also acts like Mashiro's older sister. They were previously neighbors when they were younger but Ageha had to move away because of her mother's new job.
  • Sora Harewataru: Although confused about Sora's background, Ageha warms up to Sora, and quickly befriends her.
  • Ellee-chan: Ageha instantly becomes fond of Ellee-chan upon their first meeting. She also protects Ellee-chan from Kabaton's Ranborgs. Since Ageha has an interest in being a nursery school teacher, Ageha is able to come up with many ideas to keep Ellee-chan entertained, or to make her happy.
  • Yuunagi Tsubasa: When Ageha first met Tsubasa, she referred to him as "boy", but begins using this nickname less often after realizing he didn't like it. Ageha's extroverted nature made Tsubasa feel uncomfortable at first, but she is able to become his friend after Tsubasa starts to understand her better. Ageha does all that she can give him a helping hand, much to his annoyance. Ageha eventually allows Tsubasa to look after himself, as well as letting Tsubasa help her out when she needs it.
  • Saotome Maria and Saotome Kaguya: Her older sisters. Ageha shares similarities personality-wise with Maria and Kaguya. Due to their parents' divorce, Ageha doesn't always get to see them, so she cherishes the time she can spend with them.
  • Osanai Takeru: A student Ageha looked after at the Sorashido Nursery. Ageha upsets Takeru when she scolds him but she is able to get along with him afterwards after she transforms into Cure Butterfly to protect him. Ageha then asks Takeru to keep her Pretty Cure identity a secret. Ageha is saddened when she learns that Takeru is going to move away, but comes to terms with his departure after talking things out with him, and gives him a parting gift of rainbow butterflies.
  • Battamonda: Ageha initially detests Battamonda for his bad personality and attitude. However, she forgives him after watching him returning Mashiro's Mirage Pen, and how he decides to change his ways.

Etymology

Hijiri ()? means "holy" or "sacred"[1].

Ageha (あげは)? means "swallowtail butterfly"[2], which refers to Ageha's Pretty Cure alter ego, Cure Butterfly. It can also allude to the Japanese onomatopoeia "ageage" (アゲアゲ)?, which can mean "to be excited".[3]

Cure Butterfly is a type of insect with large, often brightly coloured wings[4].

History

Past

Before meeting Mashiro, Ageha's parents divorced. Ageha's mother took Ageha, while her father took her older sisters, Maria and Kaguya. Due to this, Ageha always cherishes the time she gets to spend with her sisters. HSPC28

As a child, Ageha was happy with her life and friendship with Mashiro, until her family had to move to another town because of her mother's new job. Unable to accept the upcoming move, Ageha ran away tearfully and refused to leave, until Mashiro comforted her, which helped her accept her family's decision.HSPC04

It is later revealed that Ageha used to be a lonely child when she was in nursery school, until one of the teachers approached and comforted her by wishing her sadness to disappear. Touched by the teacher's kindness, Ageha since decided to become a nursery school teacher.HSPC36

Learning About Pretty Cure

Ageha decides to return to Sorashido City to run some errands and apply to learn how to be a nursery school teacher at Welfare and Nursery Care Vocational School, where she reunites with Mashiro. She is surprised to meet Sora and Ellee-chan, but warms up to both of them quickly, and lets Mashiro take her time about revealing Sora's background. When Kabaton's two Ranborgs attack, Ageha escorts both Mashiro and Ellee-chan to the school building's roof. Although shocked when Mashrio obtains a Mirage Pen, Ageha encourages Mashiro to be confident with herself, which leads to her witnessing Mashiro transform for the first time. After the fight, Ageha jokingly admits that she won't be able to forget what happened.HSPC04

Helping Sora

Ageha bumps into Sora and decides to hang out with her. After giving Sora a parfait, she learns that Sora is lonely and misses Mashiro, so she takes Sora to Pretty Holic to put some make-up on her. There, she encourages Sora to be honest with Mashiro. That evening, Ageha can tell someone is talking about her, and assumes it was Sora who had told Mashiro about how she felt.HSPC06

Understanding Tsubasa

Ageha unintentionally gives off a bad impression when she woke Tsubasa up, and acted too pushy. She later pairs up with Tsubasa during the team's trip to Mount Raso. As they walk up the mountain, Ageha is very friendly and tries to help Tsubasa, but Tsubasa leaves her behind after he gets fed up with her. But when Tsubasa meets her at the top of the mountain, she is able to make up with him. Soon afterwards, she is held hostage by the Ranborg, but Wing saves her after she tricks the Ranborg into freeing her and Ellee-chan. As the sun sets, Ageha is happy to know that Tsubasa is becoming more comfortable around her as she drives her friends home.HSPC11

Becoming Cure Butterfly

After the Cures defeat Battamonda's Ranborg, Battamonda tells Ageha to prepare herself for next time after she calls him a sore loser. Sometime later, Ageha starts her first practicum at a nursery school, where she admits she's friends with the Pretty Cure. Ageha takes home letters for the Cures, and in turn, takes their responses back to the children. There, she witnesses Takeru interpret Wing's message the wrong way, and tries to reason with him, but he runs out of the building. Ageha chases after him, but they're interrupted by Battamonda and his Ranborg. Ageha tries to get Takeru to evacuate while the Cures fight, but fails to when Battamonda spots him. With the Cures trapped, Ageha grabs Takeru and runs around the Ranborg, making it dizzy. Battamonda accuses Ageha of being an outsider, but Ageha declares herself to being the best nursery school teacher which just like being the best hero. This triggers a Mirage Pen to appear before Ageha, so she turns to Ellee-chan for her Sky Tone, giving her the ability to transform into Cure Butterfly. With Takeru cheering her on, Butterfly easily overpowers the Ranborg by wrapping it up in construction tarp, before purifying it with Butterfly Press. Butterfly then asks Takeru to keep the fact she's a Pretty Cure a secret. Later on, Ageha arrives at Mashiro's house, declaring that she'll now be living with everyone now that's a Pretty Cure too.HSPC18

A New Power

Ageha works hard around the house to keep it clean, make breakfast for everyone, and take care of Ellee-chan. After Ageha falls asleep when working on the design for a mural, she is asked by Tsubasa to rely on him, so Ageha tells him to keep his schedule open for the next day. The next day, Ageha takes Tsubasa and Ellee-chan to the mural, where she asks Tsubasa to help her paint her design. One thing leads to another, and the painting is done, with some help from Ellee-chan as well. However, Ageha has to protect the mural now that Battamonda has showed up. While Butterfly and Wing try their best to protect it, Battamonda decides to have a one-on-one battle with his Ranborg against Butterfly's shield. Butterfly struggles until Wing joins in to give her a boost. Butterfly and Wing's feelings grant them the Sky Tone W Flying, so they attempt to perform Updraft Shining only for the Colorful Action Mix Palette to appear instead. Not knowing how to use it, Butterfly decides to mix two colors together to give Tsubasa a power boost, before using Titanic Rainbow Attack to purify the Ranborg. After the battle, Sora and Mashiro are informed about Ageha's hard work, which prompts Ageha to happily rely on them for help as well.HSPC19

Fashion Show With Her Sisters

When Ageha's sisters Maria and Kaguya come to Sorashido City to be at a fashion show, she is overjoyed to see them. Ageha later tells her sisters about her friends, and tells them she is striving to be a nursery school teacher instead. When Ellee-chan is intimidated by the crowd, Ageha comforts her, and saves the show by joining in when the audience are unfamiliar with her. When Minoton summons a Ranborg to attack the Saotome Sisters and Kako, Butterfly vows to protect them because of the smiles they have whenever they support each other's dreams, and being together with her sisters is always exciting. In the end, Maria and Kaguya thank Ageha for saving the show, and they wish her the best with achieving her dream. HSPC28

Bidding Takeru Farewell

As Ageha continues learning how to be a teacher at the Sorashido Nursery School, she has grown closer to Takeru. However, after learning that Takeru has been distancing himself as he will have to move to another town, Ageha becomes upset, knowing that she can't prevent Takeru's move from happening. Although Ageha tries to hide her sadness, her friends notice that she hasn't been honest to them. After Ageha tells her friends the reason why she strives to become a nursery school teacher, Tsubasa approaches her the next day, and gives Ageha encouragement on why the children at the nursery school adore her, which emotionally touches her.

After being encouraged by Tsubasa, Ageha decides to have a heart-to-heart with Takeru, finally telling Takeru how she is going to miss him. She then tells Takeru to evacuate and stay with his classmates when Skearhead's Kyoborg is summoned. After the fight, Ageha learns that the same teacher she met is actually Takeru's grandmother, and she and Takeru promise each other to improve themselves before meeting again. On Takeru's moving day, Butterfly drives to a parking lot near a set of train tracks and uses the Colorful Action Mix Palette to create rainbow butterflies to cheer Takeru up, before waving him goodbye. HSPC36

Epilogue

After the final battle, Ageha bids Sora, Tsubasa and Ellee-chan farewell with a smile. Despite this, Ageha can't help but feel sad about her friends leaving. However, she is glad that she has inspired Tsubasa, who vows to become a cool adult like her. Fortunately, Ageha is happy that her friends are able to visit via Sky Land's tunnel the next day.HSPC50
