Hikawa Maria (氷川まりあ?) is a supporting character in Happiness Charge Pretty Cure! and Iona's older sister. She was first mentioned in episode 13 but seen in episode 21.

Her alter ego is Cure Tender (キュアテンダー?).

Bio[]

Appearance[]

As a civilian, Maria has long black hair and smoky-indigo eyes. She wears a light indigo and white dress and black sandals.

As Cure Tender, her hair turns blue and is worn in a loose ponytail with an ivory heart-shaped hair clip and a white ribbon. She wears a dark blue and gold vest with a pale blue back ribbon and light indigo lapels over a white ruffled blouse. On her chest is a gold heart-shaped brooch with an ivory bow. She also wears a light indigo pencil skirt with the bottom sticking up and white knee-high boots with blue bows at the top. Her accessories consist of white arm warmers that extend past her elbows and gold crescent moon earrings.

When she gets brainwashed, her hair turns purple and gets tied more tightly. Her eyes turn red. Her vest, boots, arm warmers, and hair ribbon become black, and her chest bow turns grey. Her vest is longer now and gains a large collar and indigo sleeves. Her skirt becomes shorter, looser, and a darker shade of indigo, and her brooch and hair clip are oval-shaped now. Gold butterfly symbols replace her boot ribbons, and pink butterfly wings with black borders replace her back ribbon.

Personality[]

Maria is described as a kind, friendly, and courageous girl who always wants to protect everyone. She encourages people and is admired by many. According to Glasan, Maria has a mighty but gentle heart.

Relationships[]

  • Hikawa Iona: Her younger sister. When she went missing, Iona began to grieve and planned to defeat Phantom to avenge her. Maria proved to be protective of her as she took an attack from Phantom intended for Iona. Iona also said that Maria was powerful and popular with a strong heart. In episode 38, Iona had to save Maria, who was under the control of Queen Mirage. Throughout the battle, she tried to make Maria remember that she was her sister and that she saved her from Phantom's attack. After a fierce battle, Iona and the rest of the Cures freed Maria using Innocent Purification, and the sisters shared a tearful reunion.
  • Glasan: Glasan admires Cure Tender. She is her old fairy partner, as Iona took over Maria's powers.
  • Phantom: Phantom defeated her and trapped her in a mirror. He said that she is one of the strongest among the Cures he had faced but finds her naïve. In episode 39, Maria decided to stop him from capturing Pretty Cure, though it is unknown whether the two crossed paths again.

Etymology[]

Hikawa (氷川?): Hi (氷) means "ice," and kawa (川) means "river." Together, Hikawa (氷川) means "glacier."

Maria (まりあ?) has many translations. Two Latin meanings are "wished for child" and "star of the sea." Despite the name's non-Japanese origin, it has decent popularity as a girl's name in Japan.

Cure Tender means "showing gentleness and concern or sympathy," "vulnerable," or "sensitive."

History[]

History As A Pretty Cure[]

Cure tender hikawa maria

Cure Tender fighting Phantom

Some time ago, she protected Miyo from a Saiark attack, which had inspired her to create the show Pretty Cure Weekly.

One night, she battled against Phantom, with Iona watching them. When he attacked Iona, Tender stepped in to take the hit and protect her sister. Before she was sealed in a mirror, she gave Iona her PreChanMirror. Phantom did not know that Iona was Tender's sister until he picked up her PreChanMirror after defeating her. He added that Tender's kindness led to her downfall.

Being Brainwashed[]

Episode 37 revealed that Queen Mirage brainwashed Cure Tender. She appears before the Cures by freeing Oresky, who is about to be purified by Happiness Big Bang. Once she steps out of the ensuing cloud of smoke, all of the Cures, especially Cure Fortune, are very shocked. During the next episode, she battles against the Cures, easily beating them and overcoming their Innocent Forms. All the while, Cure Fortune keeps trying to get to her, but fails most of the time, as Tender is too deep under Mirage's influence. Every time her control over Tender would slip, Mirage would strengthen it. Just as Tender is about to kill her sister, she stops as she sees a vision of Iona in place of Fortune, which breaks Mirage's control on Tender temporarily. Mirage then brainwashs Tender once more, much to Fortune's devastation. However, Fortune's feeling for Tender awakens the Shining Make Dresser, and allows the Cures to use Innocent Purification to free Tender from Mirage's control completely.

Going To North America[]

In episode 39, Maria tells Blue and the girls that she is going to America to help the other Pretty Cure, and to also see her parents. At first, Iona doesn't want her to go, wanting her to stay and join the Happiness Charge Pretty Cure!, but Maria has already decided. Soon after, Iona understands Maria's choice, and Maria leaves the next day. Before she does so, she tells Iona that the Cures are strong enough to handle everything without her, and that they can overcome anything if they stick together. Iona promises Maria to protect the peace of Pikarigaoka.

In episode 43, Maria as Cure Tender fights against a Saiark while protecting North America from its attacks.

Returning To Pikarigaoka To Save The Cures[]

In episode 46, Cure Tender returns to defend the Happiness Charge! Cures against one of Red's Saiarks. The Cures nearly lose to a brainwashed Seiji, and they, especially Megumi, are afraid that they might not save him and defeat Red, but Tender, along with the other International Cures, encourages them to keep fighting. During the fight, Tender performs a combination attack with Fortune. As the Cures fly off to Red's planet, she wishes them good luck and was confident that they could save the world.

Tender later watches with a smile after knowing that the Cures have saved Earth from Red in the last episode.

Cure Tender[]

Cure Tender (キュアテンダー?) is Maria's alter ego. As Glasan and Iona described, she is powerful and has a strong heart. She transformed using her PreChanMirror and, according to Iona, later gave it to her.

In episodes 37 and 38, she was brainwashed by Queen Mirage. She was completely different from her true self, very loyal to Queen Mirage and even more powerful than Phantom, as she broke up Happiness Big Bang with ease and even fought the Cures in their Innocent Forms. However Fortune's feelings still reached her, and the Cures freed her with Innocent Purification.

Despite having no LovePreBrace or item like Cure Honey and Cure Fortune (after episode 22), Cure Tender is capable of performing her attacks without any of those.
