Natsuki Rin

Natsuki Rin (夏木りん)^? is one of the five main Cures in Yes! Pretty Cure 5 and Yes! Pretty Cure 5 GoGo!. She is a second-year student at L'École des Cinq Lumières, and she's also in the same class as Nozomi, and later Kurumi.

Her alter ego is Cure Rouge (キュアルージュ, Cure Rouge)^? and she is known as the Pretty Cure of Passion.

Bio[]

Appearance[]

Rin has short auburn hair that curls upwards in a pointed fashion at either side of her head. Her bangs are spaced out at the right and her slanted eyes are also auburn. She has two short, small strands sightly sticking out on her head on the right. Her casual attire in GoGo consists of a red and white raglan top with a cerise rose-like print on the top left corner with leaf-like details, a crimson mini-skirt with a rectangular section at the front of it being burgundy with thin gold lining at either side, beige boots with buckled straps, and dark grey knee-high stockings.

During the summer, she wears a light red t-shirt with two pastel orange butterflies on the front and on the right sleeve, and a black belt with a light silver buckle, pale grey shorts, cream thigh-high stockings, and light beige loafers with dark brown straps and soles.

In the Yes! 5 movie, she wears a red long-sleeved top under a short-sleeved beige jacket with a fluffy cream trim, a dark seaweed green plaid skirt and denim capris, and a pair of red and gold sneakers with white laces and soles, the laces forming a bow on top. She later wears a princess dress at the amusement park consisting of a red bow at the back of her hair, the back of her waist, on her white opera-length gloves, and on her chest, worn with a salmon strapless bodice pointing upwards with a coral red segment in the middle, a red choker, a foot-length coral pleated skirt, the upper pleats having a single lighter stripe running across, a red layer that splits in the middle with white ruffled trimming, and red heels.

In the Yes! 5 GoGo! movie, she wears a light red top with white cuffs, a mauve ribbon at the neck with a light red flower shaped gem hanging the ribbon, and pale pink ruffles on the sides along with beige shorts and tan and brown lace-up boots.

As an adult, Rin's hair now reaches her shoulders and is a little more unkempt. Her front bangs are also longer, reaching above her eyes. She has lip gloss. She wears a short ruffly-sleeved beige blouse with brown buttons, a light brown ankle-length skirt with straps, and dark brown Mary Janes. She wears a gold bracelet on her left wrist and a pair of red earrings.

She also has alternate casual outfits as an adult. The first set is a black turtleneck with a light maroon blouse, black belt, light black skirt, and brown boots. The other set is a golden necklace, a black vest or a shirt, a light maroon jacket, a long grey skirt with a slit, brown tights, and light brown high heels.

As Cure Rouge in Yes! 5, her eyes and hair become bright red, her hair growing out to resemble a flame with a magenta swallowtail butterfly-shaped hair clip with a pale pink accented inside on the right. Her bangs are slightly grown out to the shoulders with sharpened sides and she wears red butterfly-shaped earrings. She gains a pale cream crop top, bodice, and pleated skirt with red scallops around the top, red lining on the bottom of the skirt and crop top, and a pale pink ruffled trimming along the skirt and shoulders. Her handless gloves and socks match her dress with the gloves having pointing downward arched bands, and her socks being folded, and on the chest is a red swallowtail butterfly-shaped bow with a dark purple accented inside and a green gem with gold lining as the brooch, and beneath is a round red segment on her top. A red bow rests on the back of her skirt. She also wears dark pink shorts and short coral boots with red rectangular sides, soles, and platform heels, and light salmon soles. On the hand of each glove is a pastel red butterfly-shaped gem, and her Pinky Catch is worn on the wrist.

As Super Cure Rouge, she gains additional ruffles on her skirt with her shoulder ruffles growing, while her crop top gains frilly sides, and her boots lengthen into wing-like sides. She gains large red swallowtail butterfly-shaped wings.

In Yes! 5 GoGo!, her shorts and earrings remain the same. Her outfit becomes a pale pink ruffled dress with red pointed bands on the sleeves and lining the apricot vest with a light salmon inside worn over it. The bow on her chest changes in shape and is now outlined in chiffon with the inside now dark red, the brooch curving downwards, with a pale pink rose-shaped button below and a gold string connected to the small purse on her right hip with her CureMo inside. Her boots, socks, and gloves change in shape, as the gloves become more pointed with a pale red line in the center and the butterfly on her hand retained, the socks now have a folded cuff stick out, and the boots' cuffs are layered and scalloped.

As Rainbow Cure Rouge, her hair turns neon red while her hair accessory changes into three pale pink wing-shaped pieces, losing the rose. Her outfit turns paler with light scarlet accents, with her sleeves, skirt, vest, leg warmers, and boots changing shape; her sleeves become shorter, pale cream, and frilly, her now pale pink skirt gains a white scalloped layer above it to resemble feathers, her vest has more wavy scallops and a scalloped collar with the ends of it being long to resemble feathers, her shorts lighten, her gloves gain white frills on top, and her boots become frilly to resemble feathers, her socks' folded parts scalloping. A light pink rose appears on her chest while small cream wings appear on her back.

Personality[]

Rin is a girl who displays both tomboyish and feminine traits. She has a passion for designing accessories and is responsible for creating the designs for Natts House. Rin is straightforward and down-to-earth in her personality, which contrasts with the cheerful and optimistic nature of her best friend, Yumehara Nozomi. Rin takes on a nurturing role towards her and her own younger siblings, often acting as a big sister figure.

Although Rin is usually straightforward, she can be hot-headed, impatient, and passionate at times, which can lead to clashes with more reserved and stubborn individuals. Rin's greatest fear is losing someone she loves, which is most noticeable in her attachment to Nozomi. Additionally, Rin has a fear of unnatural things^YPC502, which stems from her childhood where it took her a long time to recover after being startled by such things.

Relationships[]

Yumehara Nozomi: Nozomi and Rin have been close friends since childhood and thus care about each other more than the others of Pretty Cure. Though Rin refuses to be a part of it in the beginning, she eventually receives the Cure of Passion's power because she wanted to protect Nozomi. Their relationship is similar to Akane and Miyuki from Smile Pretty Cure!.
Minazuki Karen: Rin and Karen did not get along at first, but learned to sort most of their differences out as they worked together. However, as Cure Rouge and Cure Aqua, they do not let their normal selves' feelings toward each other get in the way, and they usually make up fairly quickly after acknowledging each other's opinions.
Natsuki Ai and Natsuki Yu: Her younger siblings. They annoy Rin and cause her trouble. However, she loves them a lot, even though they make fun of her sometimes.
Mucardia: Rin had a secret crush on Momoi Kyosuke, the human alias for Mucardia after they met and he gave her a red flower after playing tennis. She was initially nervous around him and unsure of herself, until she found out that he only used her to get close to Pretty Cure.

Etymology[]

Natsuki (夏木, Natsuki)^?: Natsu (夏, Natsu)^? translates to "summer", most likely referring to her fire-based powers since summer is the hottest of the four seasons, and ki (木, ki)^? translates to "tree".

Rin (りん, Rin)^?: A name with many possible meanings, as both a name and a word used in everyday language, depending on how it is written in kanji. Rin's name is written in hiragana instead, so it is not possible to find an exact meaning for her name, particularly since none of the potential meanings relate to her powers or her personality. It is possible that her name was simply an arbitrary choice. Although Rin's name is written in hiragana, if it was written in kanji like this: rin (凜, rin)^?, it would mean "dignified".

Cure Rouge is the French word for "red", her signature color. French is also a language often used in the Yes! Pretty Cure 5 universe.

History[]

Yes! Pretty Cure 5[]

Rin, the childhood friend of Nozomi, often keeps watch over her, and attempts to help her settle on one club to join. After being told by Nozomi, who had transformed into a Cure, Rin initially doesn't believe her friend, and continuously brushes Nozomi off throughout their day. Eventually, Rin finally believes Nozomi after witnessing a few chats between her friend and Coco, but rejects the offer to become a Pretty Cure due to how busy she normally is.

While Rin reflects on what becoming a Pretty Cure could mean, along with her friendship with Nozomi, she is confronted by Girinma, and she attempts to get Nozomi to stop being a Pretty Cure out of concern for her safety. When Nozomi refuses and transforms into Cure Dream, Rin witnesses how Cure Dream gets hurt. Realizing how much Nozomi means to her, the red butterfly accepts Rin, and she transforms into Cure Rouge. Afterwards, Rin agrees to join Pretty Cure.^YPC502

After the team of five Pretty Cure is gathered, Rin and Karen show signs of not getting along, evident with how they argue over the slightest matters, such as how to decorate Natts House and later having what kind of tea for snacks. When Arachnea summons a Kowaina that overwhelms the other Cures, Rouge and Aqua continue bickering, but then begin to find out that they still can complement each other as they help free their friends. Both Rin and Karen then discover that they are similar when wanting to protect others and not wanting to lose easily, and thus begin to befriend each other despite their disputes.^YPC508

With not much time remaining, Rin struggles to decide which club to join, especially when she is good at all of the club activities. However, after playing with her younger siblings and defeating Gamao's Kowaina, Rin realizes she likes playing futsal, and in the end joins the futsal club after said club's members approach her.^YPC513

After having a crush on a customer who visited Natts House, Rin begins to act strangely, even starting to show her feminine side of making jewelry. But as she is going to give the male customer her bracelet, she finds out he already has a girlfriend. After giving both the man and his girlfriend two bracelets, she runs off in shock and sadness. However, Rouge decides to overcome her sadness and look forward for the future, now that she has begun discovering her hobby of designing and making jewelry, and also wanting to live her life to the fullest.^YPC517

Rin later succumbs to despair after Milk causes a huge argument within the team, with her and Karen lambasting Komachi for not taking sides. Kawarino catches Rouge, and she is put on a Mask of Despair after she is overwhelmed by Girinma with how her fake younger self tells her that Nozomi is ungrateful for her friendship.^YPC523The controlled Cure Rouge completely ignores Nozomi's attempts to remove the mask, and even tries restraining Cure Dream. Along with the other Cures, Cure Rouge is eventually restored to her normal self by Cure Dream's efforts at reaching out to her and the other Cures.^YPC524

When requested by Komachi's sister on designing a crown for her engaged friend Miku, Rin isn't sure if she can take on such a huge responsibility. However, after being visited by Miku, Rin begins to feel more confident with the task. In the end, Rin manages to succeed in her task and is able to give Miku a beautiful tiara for the wedding.^YPC532

Yes! Pretty Cure 5 GoGo![]

Rin later resumes being a Cure after she and her friends encounter the new enemy Scorp.^YPC5GG01 Throughout the season, she and the other Cures fight against the forces of the evil Eternal and its head Boss.

When Rin warns Nozomi to be more cautious, she keeps ignoring her concerns. Rin and Nozomi then get trapped in the Jack and the Beanstalk world when trying to catch a Palmin. While Rin wants to get out as fast as possible, Nozomi instead insists to her that they have to take a snapshot of the Palmin because it might be one of the Four Rulers. After everything is restored to normal and the girls manage to get the Palmin, who is actually Queen Bavarois, Rin apologizes for being harsh on Nozomi earlier and promises to be a better friend.^YPC5GG15

When trying to find inspiration for her jewelry designs, Rin falls for Momoi Kyousuke, the disguise of Eternal member Mucardia. However, Bunbee exposes Mucardia in front of Rin, much to her shock. Despite this heartbreak, Rin also begins to figure out that she wants to pursue further with accessory designing, as she wants to answer other's feelings.^YPC5GG41

Kibou no Chikara ~Otona Pretty Cure '23~[]

Years later, Rin has become a jewelry designer, but continues playing soccer as a hobby. She is the only friend that Nozomi has stayed in contact with after graduation. However, Rin isn't too satisfied with her life as an adult, as most of her designs aren't accepted by her company.

When Nozomi tries a failed transformation in public, Rin has to frantically cover for her. Both Rin and Nozomi then meet Urara, Komachi, Karen and Kurumi, whom they have not contacted in years, again. Although both she and Nozomi are confused, Rin is still happy to see her friends again.^KnCOPC01

When Rin meets up with Nozomi the next day, she and Nozomi are caught up in the Shadows' attack. Rin then catches Nozomi after she watches her best friend being attacked by one of the Shadows. She is shocked after witnessing Nozomi temporarily de-aging and transforming into Cure Dream in front of her, before Nozomi shows her the recovered CureMo afterwards.^KnCOPC02

Upon being told that her design is not good enough for an upcoming in-house competition, Rin rushes over to the bar after seeing a text from Nozomi. There, she learns about the evolving Shadows and Bell. Rin then excuses herself and walks home with Karen, who tells her about her poor sleeping habits. Rin recommends trying aromatherapy to help her sleep better. At home, Rin declines a soccer game invite so she can focus on improving her design. Rin then calls her mom, who tells her that Yu and Ai are impressed that she's doing a job she loves. The next day, Rin oversleeps and quickly catches a taxi, where she sees a Shadow that looks like a dog but decides to ignore it. Rin doesn't do well during her presentation since she can't stop thinking about the Shadow. Rin then decides to visit Karen, who informs her about Dark Night Light seeing a dog-like Shadow. Since they also mention Panpaka Bakery, Rin goes with Karen to visit Saki to ask more about Dark Night Light. While standing under a huge tree, Rin admits to Karen that she saw the Shadow and thinks she can't become a Pretty Cure anymore. Rin also admits she doesn't have a "can-do attitude" anymore since she now knows that being an adult isn't easy. Karen tells her that it's okay to ask for help. However, their conversation is cut short when Shadows appear. Rin starts to feel guilty as she watches Aqua in battle. But due to wanting to help Aqua, Rin is able to summon her CureMo, transform into Cure Rouge, and help Aqua defeat the Shadows. Rin then sends a message to the Pretty Cure group about her transformation.^KnCOPC06

After the final battle against the Shadows, Rin finally gets to create a design with passion, which is approved by her boss. She also starts going to other countries to help people from third world countries, in hopes of changing the future for the better.^KnCOPC12

Cure Rouge[]

Cure Rouge (キュアルージュ, Cure Rouge)^?, also known as the Cure of Passion, wears red and orange clothing, and her counterpart is Cure Dream. Her strength erupts fire within her. She transforms saying "Pretty Cure Metamorphose!".

Alone, Cure Rouge can perform Rouge Fire. Later in the story, when she receives her Rouge Tact, she can use Rouge Burning. Together with the other girls, she can do the Five Explosion attack.

Rouge2 — Cure Rouge in the second season.

In the sequel, when her outfit and powers are upgraded, she can use the attack Fire Strike. Together with the others in Pretty Cure, she can do Rainbow Rose Explosion and, with Milky Rose, Floral Explosion.

Super Cure Rouge[]

In Yes! Pretty Cure 5: Kagami no Kuni no Miracle Daibouken!, Pretty Cure are nearly defeated by Shadow, but thanks to Migirin and Hidarin, as well as the Miracle Lights, a special power is brought upon Pretty Cure, giving them slightly advanced outfits as well as butterfly wings, colored in their theme colors. Thanks to this, they are able to use a powerful version of Five Explosion to defeat Shadow and free the Pinkies she took. Milk claims they are Super Pretty Cure, though it is unknown if this is just something she calls them, or if it is a name mentioned in the legends.

Cure Rainbow Rouge[]

Cure Rainbow Rouge (キュアレインボールージュ, Cure Rainbow Rouge)^? is an upgrade Cure Rouge gains in Pretty Cure All Stars DX 2: Kibou no Hikari - Rainbow Jewel o Mamore!. Together with the others' upgrades, the group of seventeen girls form the group Cure Rainbow. This upgraded outfit resembles that of Shining Dream from Yes! Pretty Cure 5 GoGo!: Okashi no Kuni no Happy Birthday!, except with the color red instead of pink and a pair of small golden wings instead of grand white ones.

Transformations[]

Pretty Cure Metamorphose! - "Pretty Cure metamorphose!" is the official transformation phrase used by Rin to transform into Cure Rouge in Yes! Pretty Cure 5 and Yes! Pretty Cure 5 GoGo!

In Yes! Pretty Cure 5, Rin's Pinky Catch opens and she shouts, "Pretty Cure...". She makes a circular motion with her arm and shouts, "...metamorphose!" Her body then becomes covered in a red glow. Her top and brooch appear first, followed by her arm warmers, skirt and boots. Her hair turns red, her Pinky Catch closes and Cure Rouge recites her introductory speech.

In Yes! Pretty Cure 5 GoGo!, Rin's CureMo opens and she presses the buttons while saying, "Pretty Cure metamorphose!" Then her CureMo's screen glows and red light surrounds her body. Next a red tunnel appears with light showing at the end. Rin appears with her body covered in flames. Her arm warmers appear and in a burst of fire, her entire outfit appears. Cure Rouge flies down, she opens her eyes and recites her introductory speech.

Attacks[]

Rouge Fire (ルージュファイアー, Rouge Fire)^?: The red butterfly mark on her arm ignites on fire and produces a mass of fire. She then thrusts her hand at the mass, sending it to the enemy and defeating it.
- Rouge Burning (ルージュバーニング, Rouge Burning)^?: This is the upgraded version of Rouge Fire. Red light from Cure Rouge's butterfly bow shines, whereas the light follows her right arm. When it has reached her fingertips, the Rouge Tact appears. Using this, she holds up the tact, then pulls it back. The rod portion of the item ignites on fire, and like her first attack, produces a mass of fire. She then thrusts the tact at the mass, sending it to the enemy and destroying it.
Fire Strike (ファイヤーストライク, Fire Strike)^?: Cure Rouge makes fists with both hands and crosses them in front of her chest, causing the butterfly-shaped emblem to glow with her signature color. A ball of fire appears in front of Cure Rouge, and she kicks the ball at high speed at the enemy. The enemy gets surrounded by a red butterfly upon impact and is usually defeated.
Five Explosion (ファイブエクスプロージョン, Five Explosion)^?: This is a group attack she performs with the other Cures during Yes! Pretty Cure 5. To perform it, they need the Symphony Set and for Milk's willpower to be at its peak. For this attack, they ram the enlarged set into the enemy to purify it.
Rainbow Rose Explosion (レインボーローズエクスプロージョン, Rainbow Rose Explosion)^?: This is a group attack she performs with the other Cures during Yes! Pretty Cure 5 GoGo! For it, they need the Cure Fleurets. The attack itself has them summoning roses in their respective theme colors that combine to purify the enemy.

Rin's voice actor, Takeuchi Junko, has participated in several image songs for the character she voices. Many of them include duets with Sanpei Yūko, who voices Yumehara Nozomi, Ise Mariya, who voices Kasugano Urara, Nagano Ai, who voices Akimoto Komachi, Maeda Ai, who voices Minazuki Karen, and later, Sendai Eri, who voices Milk/Mimino Kurumi.

Rin's surname is a homophone of Natsuki's name, a movie character from Wonderful Pretty Cure! The Movie! Dokidoki♡Game no Sekai de Daibouken!.
Cure Rouge is the first Cure to have:
