Pretty Cure All Stars (プリキュアオールスターズ )? is a series comprises a collection of crossover movies that bring together characters from various Pretty Cure anime series. These films typically unite all the Cures to combat a malevolent force that poses a threat to the existence of the multiverse. This threat is often manifested by an amalgamation of components from previous monsters and villains, creating a tough opponent for the Pretty Cure to overcome.
History
The very first time a Pretty Cure All Stars project was made was in 2008. With the premiere of Yes! Pretty Cure 5 GoGo!: Okashi no Kuni no Happy Birthday!, a short was screened in honor of the franchise's fifth anniversary featuring a crossover among the first three generations of Pretty Cure.
In 2009, the very first All Stars movie titled Pretty Cure All Stars DX: Minna Tomodachi - Kiseki no Zen'in Daishuugou! was announced and screened in March of the same year, featuring the first four generations excluding the mid-season Cure for Fresh!. This format was carried onto the next movies.
After the show Happiness Charge Pretty Cure!, each season ends with a "passing the torch" scene where the main Cure from the completed season hands over to the lead Cure for the next season. This tradition is inspired by the Hand-Off Super Sentai tradition. Mahou Tsukai Pretty Cure! even had the lead Cure of the next season appear in its last episode. This tradition has continued in all seasons produced afterward.
As of 2016, Pretty Cure All Stars: Minna de Utau♪ Kiseki no Mahou! was the last movie under the All Stars label and is now replaced by Pretty Cure Stars, a new trilogy that will only feature three teams: the current team and the two recent ones. However, in crossover merchandising and book releases, the title All Stars is still used. Since the stand-alone movie for Mahou Tsukai Pretty Cure!, it is also a trend to feature a cameo of previous Cures during the movie's climax.
In 2018, to celebrate Pretty Cure's 15th anniversary, the series HUGtto! Pretty Cure had two crossover episodes (episodes 36 and 37). The series' special movie, HUGtto! Pretty Cure♡Futari wa Pretty Cure: All Stars Memories, was a crossover feature that included lines from all 55 existing main Cures. Starting with HUGtto!, the anniversary season's standalone movie was turned into an All Stars movie, similar to what was done with the movie for Hirogaru Sky! Pretty Cure to celebrate Pretty Cure's 20th anniversary in 2023.
