"Hot-Blooded! Akane's Okonomiyaki Life!!" (熱血!あかねのお好み焼き人生!! Nekketsu! Akane no Okonomiyaki Jinsei!!?) is the 10th episode of Smile Pretty Cure!, and also the 399th episode of the Pretty Cure franchise overall.

Synopsis[]

While her father is in the hospital, Akane attempts to stand in for her parents at their Okonomiyaki shop. However, she is unhappy with the results and enlists the aid of her friends to determine what may be missing.

Summary[]

One night, as Akane's father Daigo closes the Okonomiyaki restaurant, he injures his back lifting a crate of cabbages. He is taken to hospital where he is diagnosed with a slipped disc, and will be unable to work until he recovers. With an important neighborhood association scheduled at the restaurant, Akane volunteers to run the restaurant.

Meanwhile, at the Bad End Kingdom, Wolfrun is hungry but Majorina is busy cooking a disgusting medicine. Majorina throws a magazine at Wolfrun, where he sees an advertisement for okonomiyaki. He decides to visit the human world to get some food and defeat the Pretty Cure while he's there.

At school, Akane tells the girls how she's been made temporary manager. Reika mentions that the chief of the neighborhood association is a connoisseur with high standards. He had high praise for Daigo's okonomiyaki, and Akane is determined to lived up to her father's reputation.

All the talk of okonomiyaki makes Miyuki hungry, so Akane invites everyone over to her restaurant after school. There, she wows her friends with her cooking skills, but her brother Genki tastes it and finds it different to their father's. Akane agrees, but doesn't understand why, since she followed the same recipe. Genki believes Daigo uses a secret ingredient, but doesn't know what it is.

Akane decides to try and discover her father's secret ingredient, and her friends agree to help. Reika suggests mixing sweet and spicy as complementary flavors, a tip from her father, which Nao also knows. Miyuki, Yayoi and Candy use the Pudding Decor to create a giant pudding. The girls try various ingredients, but none quite match Daigo's.

Akane is disappointed, but remains upbeat and persistent, bringing up how much she respects her father because the okonomiyaki he makes always brought smiles to people's faces, no matter how dejected they looked, just like magic. She always thought that he was the only person who could make okonomiyaki like that, and so it was understandable why she could not replicate his style. With no other choice, she decides to just ask her dad about the secret ingredient.

Meanwhile, Wolfrun tries to eat at the fancy Cafe & Restaurant Ko-Kyu-, but is refused entry because he is mistaken for a human wearing a costume.

At the hospital, rather than tell Akane, Daigo chastises Akane for not truly observing what he had been doing this whole time, and claims she hasn't lived up to the restaurants name as owner. A disappointed Akane leaves in anger, vowing to find the secret ingredient on her own.

With three days remaining, the girls continue to try to search for the ingredient while Akane works late into the night to try to replicate her father's okonomiyaki. She works hard, but is unsuccessful. Akane's mother Masako asks her to remember the first okonomiyaki Akane ever made when she was little, which she made for her mother when she was sick with a cold. Masako remarks that even though it was burnt, it tasted delicious. Akane does not understand what her mother means, and continues her search.

Later, Akane's family are working at a stall at a food fair. Wolfrun, who by now has not eaten in three days, senses the okonomiyaki stand and recognizes it from the magazine. He creates a Bad End alternate reality to steal everyone's happiness to steal their food. The girls transform into Pretty Cure, and Wolfrun creates an Akanbe from an okonomiyaki sauce pot.

The Akanbe throws sauce that becomes sticky on impact, sticking Akane to the ground. Wolfrun finds a stack of Sunny's okonomiyaki experiments, eating them all, which somehow makes the Akanbe even bigger. Peace, March and Happy also become stuck with sauce. Wolfrun praises the okonomiyaki, which Sunny appreciates. Wolfrun argues that food is the same no matter who makes it, but Sunny insists that it's not as good as her father's. Wolfrun taunts Sunny for caring.

The Cures are outraged at Wolfrun's lack of respect for Sunny's efforts, with Happy insisting that they were delicious because Akane put her feelings into it. Sunny realizes that this is her father's secret ingredient.

With renewed determination, she calls for Beauty to fire Beauty Blizzard at her, which she melts with her power of fire to create rain to wash away the sauce. She delivers a fiery uppercut to the Akanbe before purifying it with Sunny Fire, earning the Cures their tenth Cure Decor, the Umbrella Decor.

On the neighborhood association's visit, the chief is impressed by Akane's okonomiyaki. Daigo returns home, and Akane boasts that she discovered his secret ingredient. He asks him to tell her what it is, but she won't tell—it's a secret, after all.

Major Events[]

  • Akane's family and siblings are shown.
  • Sunny's fire elemental power is shown in combat for the first time.
    • She is also the first Smile! Cure to utilize the powers of her element, first using fire to melt Beauty's Beauty Blizzard to create rain to wash away the hardened sauce holding her down, and then releasing another burst of fire to dry the rain off of herself.

Trivia[]

  • This episode's eyecatch is different from the others. The second eyecatch, which normally shows Candy, showed an Akanbe this episode instead, scaring the girls in the process. This also happened on episode 17, episode 28, episode 33 and 39 of Smile, due to those episodes' themes (comedy, ghosts, a movie about yokai, and the villains in control of everyone except for Miyuki.). There was a rumor that one affiliate showed said eyecatch on episode 9, due to it being April Fools', but the reason it was on Episode 10 on all affiliates except for this one is possibly a celebration of the 10th episode, or the villains venturing to the human world for food as a subplot. It is well worth noting that the commercial that aired before said eyecatch was for Tanoshii Youchien magazine on all episodes featuring it, except for episode 39, which featured two SunStar products: Color Wonder and Secret Jewelry Box.
  • The ingredients of Majorina's new medicine include lizard's tail, pig's drool, and frog's fart.
  • The Hino family's restaurant was named after Akane, as the shop was first opened when Akane was born, and her parents hoped to love the shop as much as they love their daughter. Akane is the second Pretty Cure to have her family's shop named after her; the first is Akimoto Komachi.
  • Akane uses her trademark children's counting rhyme ("chuu chuu tako kai na") when flipping the okonomiyaki.
  • Wolfrun going out to the human world to look for food is similar to how Westar from Fresh Pretty Cure! was starving and went out to find some food.
  • The plot of this episode is similar to episode 17 of Heartcatch Pretty Cure!, in which the heir to a family-run Japanese confectionery store struggles to live up to his family's standards. Episode 6 of Happiness Charge Pretty Cure! also deals with a Cure learning the importance of putting love into food made for others.
  • This is the first episode to be omitted from the Glitter Force dub, most likely due to heavily featuring Japanese food. However, okonomiyaki appears in other episodes of Glitter Force, and is even referred to by name in Glitter Force episode 22 (Smile Pretty Cure! episode 25).
