Synopsis[]

Akane and Miyuki are performing manzai, a style of Japanese stand-up comedy, in their secret base. Everyone laughs at their performance except Reika, who can't understand the joke. Akane explains that the comedy duo FUJIWARA are coming to town for a manzai contest, and Akane, a big fan of the duo, is planning to enter.

When the villains learn about the comedy event, they fear that the laughter produced would be disastrous to their goals. Majorina creates a pair of rings for her next scheme. Wolfrun and Akaoni decide to enter the contest as a duo, under the name Bad End Bombers.

At the contest, Akane heads backtage hoping to meet FUJIWARA, and she meets them. Candy nearly blows her cover, but the girls convince the comedians that it's ventriloquism. FUJIWARA is amused by the girls' actics and suggest they enter as a five-person group.

Wolfrun and Akaoni perform in the contest, but their act is just crazed ranting, and the crowd doesn't appreciate it. Next, the girls perform under the team name GoPrecure, but spotting their parents in the audience, they get stage fright and fumble their routine. The audience still thinks it's hilarious. They head backstage with a sense of failure, but but FUJIWARA gives them words of encouragement.

As FUJIWARA step on stage for their own performances, Majorina throws her magic rings around the duo's necks. It causes the pair to lose their Kansai acccents and their sense of humor, and their comedy act flops. Majorina proceeds to create a Bad End Space, sucking Bad End Energy from everyone, including FUJIWARA. Akane is angered that Majorina ruined the duo's act, and the girls transform.

Majorina uses both a Red Nose Akanbe and a Blue Nose Akanbe created from two Fujiwara signboards. The Blue Nose Akanbe, in the form of Fujimoto, knocks the Pretty Cure down with its giant head and pins them by sitting on top of them.

Majorina then starts to boast that comedy is useless and that smiles and happiness are meaningless. However, FUJIWARA overhears this and breaks free from despair, something previously only achieved by Pretty Cures. When Majorina questions how this is possible, Fujimoto replies that it's because he has such a big head, which is his comedy catchphrase. FUJIWARA declares themselves the greatest comedy duo of all time, breaking free from their constraints through sheer willpower.

Candy accidentally reveals her suspicions about FUJIWARA possibly being Pretty Cures, prompting them to try transforming. Haranishi attempts to transform into Cure Gorilla using his flip phone, but it doesn't work. However, this causes the Blue Nose Akanbe to fall over laughing, freeing the Pretty Cures.

The Red Nose Akanbe attempts to attack FUJIWARA but is stopped by Cure Sunny, who is inspired by her love for making people happy, whether through comedy or making okonomiyaki. She fights the Akanbe with fiery power and finishes it off with Sunny Fire. The other cure team up to knock over the Blue Nose Akanbe, and the five of them use Rainbow Healing to destroy it.

After everything returns to normal, FUJIWARA resumes their sketch. FUJIWARA and the Pretty Cure agree that they are united by their mission to protect people's smiles. Akane asks them to keep the Pretty Cure's identities secret, and they agree. However, to her embarrassment, during a television program, FUJIWARA performs his Cure Gorilla transformation as comedy material.

Trivia[]

  • This episode features a guest appearance by real-life comedy duo FUJIWARA, consisting of Toshifumi Fujimoto and Takayuki Haranishi. Haranishi (Cure Gorilla) is a real-life Pretty Cure fan, and the duo's YouTube channel features several Pretty Cure videos where Haranishi shows off his encyclopedic knowledge of Pretty Cure franchise.
  • FUJIWARA's inclusion in this episode is thanks to ABC producer Matsushita Hiroyuki, whose company had business connections to Osaka-based talent agencies. The duo were popular with children, and ratings for Pretty Cure franchise in Osaka were at an all-time high.[1]
  • The duo's accent is from the Kansai region. In Japanese media, Kansai accents are associated with stand-up comedy. Hino Akane also has this accent.
  • This is the third time real-life comedians have been featured in Pretty Cure. The first was Tamuken in episode 17 of Yes! Pretty Cure 5 GoGo!, and the second was another manzai duo, Audrey, in episode 27 of Fresh Pretty Cure!.
  • According to the FUJIWARA poster at the beginning of the episode, the comedy event takes place on May 27, 2012 (the same day the episode aired).
  • The girls' name for their comedy group, GoPrecure, is named after the proposed catchphrase in episode 6.
  • Fujimoto and Haranishi are the first two human characters in Smile Pretty Cure, other than the five Pretty Cures themselves, shown to have the power to resist the despair of the Bad End Space.
  • This is the second appearance of the Akanbe eyecatch, and the last time it is shown with the old style of eyecatch (without a curtain).
  • This episode is omitted from the Glitter Force dub, likely due to its focus on a Japanese style of comedy and the inclusion of real-life celebrities unfamiliar to a western audience.
