"A smile's secret! Miyuki and the real Ultra Happy!!" (笑顔のひみつ!みゆきと本当のウルトラハッピー!! Egao no himitsu! Miyuki to hontō no Urutora Happī!!?) is the 44th episode of the Smile Pretty Cure!, the 36th episode of Glitter Force, and also the 433rd episode of the Pretty Cure franchise overall. The English title is "The Gift of Friendship".

Synopsis[]

Miyuki thinks about her precious childhood friend and wishes to reunite with her to thank her for what she did in the past.

Summary[]

It is the Christmas season and Miyuki is running to meet her friends at the shopping district. She accidentally falls down but is helped by a mother and her daughter. The girl's mirror necklace sparks a memory from Miyuki's past.

Meanwhile, it is revealed that Wolfrun is still alive, but dares not return to base in defeat. Frustrated over his failure, he decides to bet on the last Black Nose and aim for Cure Happy.

Miyuki, meeting up with her friends, tells the story of how she had a mirror as a child, and how it helped her to make her first friends.

When she was little, Miyuki lived for a time wih her grandmother. A shy girl growing up, Miyuki preferred to stay at home, reading fairytales. One day, her grandmother gave her a wing-shaped mirror, encouraging her practice smiling. It gave her courage to go outside, but she was still too shy to talk to neighbouring kids.

Running beneath a tree, Miyuki asked the mirror for a friend. Just then, a breeze blew and Miyuki spotted a girl in the tree. After that, they often played together, and Miyuki wrote about it in a fairytale diary, which she titled Happy-chan and Smile-chan.

On her way to show the girl her book, Miyuki met the neighbourhood girls. She heard a voice reminding her to smile. With that, she was able to make friends with the girls. But after that, she never saw the girl again.

Looking back on it, Miyuki suspects the girl was a fairy that lived in the mirror. She credits her with beginning her search to find joy in every day.

Later, they meet Yura, the girl from before, who has gotten separated from her mother. She says the mirror pendant was a gift from her mother, who put a magic charm on it so she would be less of a crybaby. Miyuki thinks that being surrounded by the kindness of others warms the heart, and perhaps this is the source of Miyuki's true "ultra happy".

Just then, Wolfrun appears and creates Bad End Space. He demands Miyuki transform so that they can fight, and creates a Hyper Akanbe in the form of a house, like when they first met. An enraged Wolfrun goes all-out on the attack. He hates Happy's obsession with smiles and friendship, but she defends her friends' kindness, which gave her courage and strength.

Happy insists that her friends are the source of her "ultra happy", and swears to protect their kind hearts. Her resolve creates a new Decor in her Smile Pact, and Happy unlocks a new level of power. She battles the Akanbe with ease. Wolfrun can't stand the look of resolve in her eyes. She blasts him with a new power, Happy Shower Shining.

Wolfrun survives the attack and blasts Happy. Just then, the other Cures show up. They transfrom into Princess Form and defeat the Akanbe with Royal Rainbow Burst, receiving the second-last Decor.

Afterward, they help Yura to find her mother, and it begins to snow. Miyuki says that she found her ultra happiness thanks to her friends. Miyuki's happiness comes from the kindness of others, and she wants to share it with the world.

Trivia[]

  • The big tree Miyuki sits under appears to be the same as the location she suggested as a secret base in episode 7.
  • The fairytale diary Miyuki wrote about her adventures with the mysterious girl is titled "Smile-chan and Happy-chan". The girl is credited at the end of the episode as "girl in the forest".
    • Since Miyuki would grow up to be Cure Happy, this suggests a similar backstory to Cure Peace, whose original character Miracle Peace presaged her Pretty Cure identity. This would suggest that the mysterious girl is Smile-chan.
    • According to the Smile Pretty Cure novel, Miyuki actually called the girl Smile-chan (although that may just be a nickname). Later, in college, Miyuki writes an original fairy tale based on her experience titled The Secret of Smile-chan, which wins an honorable mention for the Toudou Izumi Fairytale Grand Prize.
    • A breeze accompanies the appearance and disappearance of the mysterious girl. In episode 27, Miyuki's grandmother attributes the wind to tengu, a forest spirit. Miyuki suspects the girl is a fairy which lives inside her grandmother's wing-shaped mirror. However, the girl's true identity is ultimately a mystery.
  • There is a scene of Miyuki looking at a piece of clothing with a penguin on it. Miyuki is previously shown to be a fan of penguins, such as the plushies on her bookshelves.
  • It is the last appearance of the regular Cure Happy eyecatch.
  • The Best Smile, an image song featuring all five Pretty Cures, is played at the end of the episode.
  • Because the Royal clock strikes 12, this is the second last time Royal Rainbow Burst is used. After that, a later episode introduces the Miracle Jewel.
