Synopsis

Alone in the library a girl reads the story of "The Little Mermaid". It's a story she read many times but she loves it regardless.

Meanwhile, at Pretty Holic the girls are still struggling to figure out which club they want to join. Manatsu likes everything and she wants to do so much, her problems would be over if she could just do everything in one club. Laura suggests she start her own club then, and she recommends one for Pretty Cure. Manatsu reasons that there isn't a real way to have a club like that, and she asks what Pretty Cure means in the first place. Laura recalls the legend of a young woman who protected the land of the mermaids and the land of humans. Neither girl have heard of this before, so Manatsu decides they should do some research. Laura is happy since it could lead them to discover more Pretty Cure for their group.

Manatsu and Sango head into the library but struggle trying to determine where to search. Sango recalls The Little Mermaid story, so Manatsu decides to look for that- just to bump into a girl holding it. She introduces herself to her upperclassman, who in return introduces herself as Minori Ichinose. She explains that they came in search of mermaid books, and she becomes overwhelmed by the term "non-fiction". Minori hands over The Little Mermaid and she asks if she likes things like mermaids and faeries. Manatsu confirms and asks Minori if she likes this book, and Minori expresses that while the ending is cruel she truly does love it. Manatsu goes on to ask if she believes in mermaids and faeries, and Minori points out they are fairy tales. She doesn't believe they exist. She takes off, leaving the girls confused by her reception just then.

Numeri is repairing Chongire's injury as Butler inspects. He reasons that this will put Chongire out of commission until he recovers, leaving Numeri to take his place.

Manatsu and Sango are making their way home when she brings up the possibility of Minori becoming a Pretty Cure. Laura claims she looks unreliable though, and Manatsu reasons that they barely know anything about her. For all they know she might be a karate champion. Sango suggests they ask their Teacher, and the following day they do. Sakuragawa recalls that Minori was a member of the Literacy club. She is very good with her marks and she even wrote an essay for the club magazine. Manatsu is very hyper as she admires the story, and in the process of waving around the Aqua Pot they get overheard by Minori. She recognizes the story in Manatsu's hand, and Manatsu showers her with praise and compliments. But for some reason Minori seems perturbed, and she remarks that her story was a boring fairy tale. She recalls being told by someone in the club this, and she tells the girls that she left the club. She runs off, unwilling to speak any longer.

Manatsu sadly heads to the aquarium in thought. She is caught by the Director, who mentions her liking of mermaids, and she produces some tickets to mermaid exhibit going on at the museum right now.

At home, Minori opens the box storing her story and the broken pencil she used to write with.

The following day Manatsu admires the various objects and displays with Sango and an unimpressed Laura. She pops out of the Aqua Pot and complains that none of this stuff seems real, but what humans think about her species. She begins to panic after they spot Minori, and Laura hurriedly poses with the mermaids nearby in an attempt to blend in. Minori apologizes to the girls for her behavior the other day but Manatsu reasons that they should have waited to get her permission before reading it. They didn't know it was a sore spot. Minori tells them its alright, and she goes on to observe Laura. She remarks on how realistic she looks and the girls bring up that she really does seem to like mermaids. Minori admits that since preschool she's been reading The Little Mermaid, she remembers the story by heart very fondly. She recites it for the girls, but upon hearing about the mermaids tragic fate Laura becomes frustrated, causing Minori to realize she is real.

The girls take Laura to a large fountain outside and Minori is initially speechless. Laura offers to let her touch her tail but Minori gets flustered, and Manatsu asks Minori if she would like to become a Pretty Cure too. Laura remarks on her unreliability, but she loves mermaids so its okay to try. She tosses the Tropical Pact to her, but it doesn't respond the way they hoped. Manatsu reasons that because she writes so well and loves mermaids, she thinks she would be a great member for the team. Minori momentarily seems to consider, before handing the Pact back. She doesn't believe someone like her could be the heroine of a fantasy story, and this is reality. Manatsu remains encouraged though, and she takes out her lipstick. She offers it to Minori and explains that makeup can help one gain courage, but before she can convince her to try it out Numeri appears. The frightened museum patrons run away and Numeri transforms a nearby statue into a Yaraneeda. Sango and Manatsu head over to the location of the attack, with Minori trailing after them in confusion. She is very surprised to see that the girls have transformed. Numeri introduces herself to the girls and Coral attempts to block the oncoming attack from the monster. She is unable to withstand it, forcing the duo to attempt to hold it off before it can crush them.

Minori wants to help the girls but lacks the courage to do so, convinced that she can't do anything. Laura laps out of the Aqua Pot and hands over the Tropical Pact again, saying that Manatsu believes in her. She should try before she gives up, and she is a mermaid before her, showing her proof that they do exist. As a human with legs capable of standing up against difficult times and discouragement, she should make more attempts before giving up. Minori takes Laura's words to heart and she vows to save the girls, causing the Tropical Tact to light up and form a ring on Minori's finger. She inserts it and proceeds to transform into Cure Papaya.

Papaya runs towards the Yaraneeda and leaps high into the air to kick it away from the girls. Summer and Coral admire her as she joins them and observes her new appearance and strength. Laura congratulates her as the Yaraneeda releases spikes to attack the girls again, but Papaya manages to blind the Yaraneeda using her earrings to shoot lasers at it. While its distracted, Coral and Summer attack it to let Laura take back the motivation power. Papaya looks on to realize that even though it feels like a fantasy, she's come to see that this is true reality. Her reality, and with that the yellow lipstick is born, allowing her to gain a Heart Rouge Rod. She goes on to use Panpaka Papaya Shot.

With everything returned to normal, Laura asks Minori how she feels. She admits to not really knowing, but it is a good feeling. Laura goes on to ask if she would like to touch her tail, and Minori accepts this time. She is very happy as she achnowledges that it feels real.

Trivia

  • This episode's opening features scenes from Tropical-Rouge! Pretty Cure Puchi: Tobikome! Collab Dance Party!, the short that precedes the Healin' Good movie.
  • In the original broadcast, the ending theme is a medley of "Everybody☆Healin' Good Day!" and "Tropica I・N・G". The version on Crunchyroll just has "Tropica I・N・G".
  • The Motivation Color announced before the ending is Papaya Yellow in the Crunchyroll version.
  • A mermaid picture can be seen in Minori's room. Her manuscript box also appears to have the broken pencil she dropped in the flashback, suggesting that she put it in the box when she got the manuscript back and hasn't opened it since.
  • The Yaraneeda in this episode is made from a statue resembling a Japanese Dogū, a type of earthenware figurine made in the Jōmon period.
  • This episode features a trope common in the Pretty Cure series: Multiple Cures combining their strength to hold up a large enemy above them. It usually requires all the Cures working together to shove the enemy away.
  • When Minori decides to become a Pretty Cure, she symbolically steps out of a shadow and into the light.
  • Minori takes her Cure name from the legendary papaya fruit in her own story, suggesting that she has regained a bit of confidence in her writing after Laura told her how Manatsu enjoyed the story.
    • This is similar to Kise Yayoi from Smile Pretty Cure!, who also took her Cure name from her own self-insert fictional work. Yayoi also has doubts about her own work (in her case, drawing).
