Toyama Satoru (兎山悟)? is a major character from Wonderful Pretty Cure!. He is Inukai Iroha's classmate and childhood friend, and later boyfriend. He is also the owner of Toyama Daifuku.

Bio

Appearance

Satoru has short, slightly unkempt taupe hair where small, thick pointing strands stick out. Two strands at the right side of his head bend upwards and downwards, with a cowlick bending upwards and two strands sticking downwards at the left. A full amount of bangs falls freely to his forehead, with the rest of his hair reaching his neck. He also has slit dark purple eyes and wears oval-rimmed burgundy glasses. Casual, Satoru wears a three-quarter-sleeved very pale yellow dress shirt with an orange collar, buttons, and hems. On the left side of his shirt, there is a pale orange pocket and darker tip. The placket is also pale orange. He also wears blue denim jeans with lighter cuffs, and dark blue and white sneakers with scarlet laces.

As a tween, he wore a long red-sleeved shirt underneath an orange T-shirt trimmed with a red collar, azure jeans rolled up to the ankle with pale blue insides, and short black boots with gray soles and gold tabs.

In the winter, Satoru wears a long-sleeved light yellow V-neck shirt with yellow and light red stripes on the top and bottom and at the hem. Underneath is a pale red shirt containing a salmon folded collar and placket with two whiter buttons in the center below, dark azure pants, and pale orange shoes with a pale salmon toe, white soles, and two red lined laces. When outside, he sometimes wears a gray buttoned coat with darker-colored buttons and a gray collar.

In the movie, Satoru wears a vivid copper t-shirt with pale orange trimming, with a white collared undershirt, dark azure jeans rolled up to the ankle with pale blue insides, white socks, and navy loafers with pale blue soles.

As a tween, he wore a long red-sleeved shirt underneath an orange t-shirt trimmed with a red collar, azure jeans rolled up to the ankle with pale blue insides, and short black boots with gray soles and gold tabs.

As a rabbit, Satoru has chocolate brown fur, with dark brown tips for his eyes and dull beige patches for his mouth and front paws.

In his magical boy form, his hair turns dark copper, with bangs slightly brushed to the left, and he no longer wears glasses. He sports a large white beret adorned with crimson lines on the sides and yellow stripes. His outfit consists of a long-sleeved, dark brown turtleneck shirt that reaches the arms, layered under a knee-length pale cream coat. The coat features rolled-up sleeves at the forearms, embellished with vermilion ribbons and yellow stripes. It has a large vermilion hood with a single yellow line running across its top, a vermilion waistband in the front, and a vermilion placket with yellow buttons. The bottom of the coat displays thick vermilion lines with two thin yellow lines running across them, and there’s a small vermilion ribbon at the back, with its ends reaching down to the ankles. He completes the look with dull brown pants held up by a black belt with a dark gold rectangular buckle. On his left leg, he wears two matching leg garters, and his footwear consists of red knee-length boots with dark brown toes, dull brown soles, salmon-colored tongues, and dull burgundy cuffed tops.

Personality

Satoru is kind and good at studying. He uses his extensive animal knowledge to support his friends. He tends to become shy easily when it's about his crush on Iroha.

Relationships

  • Toyama Daifuku: His pet rabbit. Satoru cares about Daifuku, and hopes to be able to communicate with him one day.
  • Inukai Iroha: His classmate and childhood friend, who later becomes his girlfriend. Satoru has been friends with Iroha for three years after meeting her when they were children, but couldn't talk to her as much in the previous year because they were in different classes. He has a crush on Iroha.[1] He prefers not to admit how he feels as he doesn't want to make Iroha feel uncomfortable, or ruin their current friendship. However, Iroha confirms she shares similar feelings for him, although she isn't sure what kind of feelings they are. Their romantic relationship is strengthed after their first date, and Satoru begins calling Iroha by her name.
  • Mey Mey: At first, Mey Mey was distrustful towards Satoru, but Satoru is able to win his trust afterwards. He's usually the only one who listens to Mey Mey.
  • Nekoyashiki Mayu: Through Iroha, Satoru becomes friends with Mayu. He is very kind towards her, and is the one who told Mayu about the secret of Niko Garden and Pretty Cure. During the Star Festival, Mayu learns about his crush on Iroha and becomes supportive of his feelings, although he tends to be embarrassed by her teasing.

Etymology

Toyama: (兎山)? To ()? means "rabbit, hare". Yama ()? means "mountain".

Satoru: ()? Satoru can be written in many different ways in kanji but in this case, ()? means "enlightenment", which is related to his vast knowledge about different animals.

History

Three years before the season, Satoru met Iroha at Iroha's family's vet clinic, after he rescued Daifuku from a snake. He then developed a crush on Iroha, after seeing how kind she was to him. He then began studying animal knowledge in order to make Iroha happy.WPC35

Satoru is pondering why a stone is called a Mirror Stone despite the fact that it doesn't show his reflection. Suddenly, he is caught off guard by Iroha. He explains to her what he is doing and discusses the reason for the stone's name. Later, Iroha expresses her desire to be in the same class as Satoru at school, which embarrasses him.WPC01

The next day, Satoru takes Daifuku to the dog run at Friendly Animal Hospital & Salon, where he meets Iroha. He allows Daifuku to play with Komugi while he talks to Iroha about his interest in learning about animals from different parts of the world. He believes that there are still many undiscovered species out there. Satoru also brings up the mysterious black animal that he saw in Kaihin Park. However, after witnessing Iroha's strange reaction, he drops the topic. Satoru reassures Iroha that she can always come to him if she ever feels troubled.WPC02

Satoru later bumps into Iroha and admits he was worried when she suddenly ran off with Komugi. Satoru doesn't believe Iroha's excuse of wanting to go for a walk and heads home. On his way home, Satoru stops in a forest and reflects on how Iroha is definitely hiding something important from him. He wonders if he isn't dependable, unapproachable, or not trustworthy when he notices a mysterious black egg. Satoru gets a closer look but is unable to touch it as Daifuku pulls him back. At home, Satoru does some research on the egg but doesn't find any information on it. The next day, Satoru goes out to investigate the egg but sees that it has hatched. However, just as the egg disappears, he is confronted by a Garugaru. Satoru runs away, and when he sees Iroha, he tells her to do the same. He then witnesses Iroha transform into Cure Friendy, as well as Komugi becoming a human who transforms into Cure Wonderful. Satoru is shocked but quickly realizes it was the secret Iroha was hiding. Satoru begs the two Cures to escape but gives them advice on how to save it when he's told the Garugaru isn't its true form. When the Kirarin Rabbit is rescued, Satoru discovers that "Pretty Cure" is the name that Iroha and Komugi go by when transformed. Satoru then travels to Niko Garden with Komugi and Iroha and tells Mey Mey to feed a Niko Fruit to the Kirarin Rabbit. Satoru promises Mey Mey that he'll keep the Pretty Cure and Niko Garden a secret and that his feelings are the same as the Pretty Cure. After being accepted by Mey Mey, Satoru admits to Iroha that he's excited to meet all kinds of animals, and laughs happily with the group.WPC03

Satoru notices Iroha and Komugi's conflict, as well as Wonderful being afraid of the Lion Garugaru.WPC06 He later takes care of Komugi after learning that she has left Iroha. Listening to how Komugi translates Daifuku's words makes him want to be able to talk with Daifuku as well. He then teaches Komugi how to properly communicate with Iroha, and is happy to see both of them make up.WPC07

When news of a Garugaru is spread in class, Satoru joins Iroha and Komugi to investigate the creature at Mount Miharashi. He and the girls later learn from the Kirarin Bear about a mysterious Pretty Cure that had cut the gem on their forehead.WPC11

Satoru later reveals to the girls that he has been searching up information about the Mirror Stone, but is unable to find any results. He also suggests Mey Mey should let Iroha tell her secret to her parents. Due to Komugi and Mey Mey exposing themselves, Satoru has to admit to Iroha's parents about knowing Komugi's secret. He is then told by Mey Mey that the girls' identities as Cures are still safe, before he is invited by Youko to have dinner for the night.WPC16

During the Star Festival, Satoru realizes Mayu has discovered his crush on Iroha. He tells Mayu to keep his crush a secret, since he doesn't want his feelings to get in the way of his friendship with Iroha. He later explains to Komugi that the wolves in Japan have gone extinct. He is also the first person to realize the Cures have collected all nine Kirarin Animals.WPC23

After the Cures fail to purify Torame's Gaogaon, Satoru thinks he is not good enough to help the Cures, until Daifuku encourages him to not give up. He then searches through the town's social media, and is able to inform the girls about Torame's whereabouts, while apologizing to Iroha that there is nothing more he can do.WPC30

When being confessed to by a female student, Satoru rejects her due to already having feelings for Iroha. When Keiichi and his dog Keiji come to visit Iroha, Satoru almost believes they are his rivals until being explained otherwise. After being encouraged by his friends, Satoru tries to express his feelings to Iroha but changes his mind at the last second and suggests they go home. Unfortunately for Satoru, Mey Mey accidentally reveals Satoru's crush in front of Iroha, causing the atmosphere to become awkward.WPC35 After watching Iroha run away after he reaffirms his feelings for her, Satoru believes he's made Iroha feel uncomfortable, and thinks it's best to remain as her platonic friend. However, after Niko translates Daifuku's encouragement for him, Satoru starts to become more honest with his feelings, despite still being hesitant. The next day, he gets kidnapped by Zakuro with her Gaogaon, until Friendy, who finally realizes her feelings for him, saves him. He is happy that Iroha confesses how she shares the same feelings for him when she tells him how she considers him to be her special kind of wonderful.WPC36

After the mutual confession, Satoru and Iroha go on their first date. When noticing that Iroha is nervous, he reassures her by telling her that he likes her no matter what. After he tells the Cures how to stop the giraffe Gaogaon, Satoru promises Mey Mey that he will continue spending time with him. Satoru then accepts Iroha's request to call her by her name as they walk home with their friends.WPC37

When Subaru shatters the Mirror Stone in anger, one fragment of the Mirror Stone lands at where Satoru and Daifuku had been lying unconscious. Satoru feels bad for only watching the Cures fight. However, Satoru watches in shock as Daifuku transforms into a human due to a fragment of the Mirror Stone. Satoru then tells Daifuku that his ultimate wish is to help the Cures, and he and Daifuku both transform into magical boys after holding hands. Both then fly towards Subaru's energy field and use their powers to open an entrance into the field, while telling the Cures to enter into the field and confront Subaru in there.WPC49 When Niko takes the animals' ability to talk and become human, Satoru is upset. However, he is later surprised and happy when Daifuku regains the ability to speak in the end.WPC50

Trivia

  • Satoru's birthday is September 7th, which coincides with National Threatened Species Day [2] in Australia. Therefore, his zodiac sign is Virgo.
    • This day is commemorated in memory of the last Tasmanian Tiger, which died at Beaumaris Zoo due to neglect, leading to its extinction in 1936.
  • Satoru is the first male supporting character and Pretty Cure ally in the franchise to be in a romantic relationship with a Cure.
  • His favorite color is orange.
  • His favorite food is beef stew.

  • Satoru isn't very athletic and isn't good at sports:
    • He quickly becomes startled when the ball is passed to him in soccer and struggles to keep up with Shou, Iroha and Komugi.WPC09

  • According to producer Funakoshi Yoko, Satoru and Daifuku's magical boy outfits for the movie were drawn by the TV team. The two of them are conscious of the fact that they are part of the Wonderful! team, and the ribbons give them a commonality as comrades fighting together.[3]
    • In addition, he was originally intended to be a male Cure, but the idea was rejected, and instead he was kept as a supporting character. He transformed in the movie to reflect the history of the ideas behind his character.[4]
  • Satoru is the only human character in the Wonderful! team who doesn't have any of his family members revealed.
    • However, according to Narita Yoshimi, Satoru has an older brother who is currently studying aboard.[5]
  • Narita Yoshimi reveals that Iroha and Satoru's future will consist of attending different high schools. Satoru would want to go to the same high school, but Iroha would convince him to go to a school that suits him because he is an excellent student. Narita also thinks after Iroha and Satoru graduate from high school, they'll go to different universities and have a long-distance relationship.[6]
